When we are alone, when everything that mattered to us, for whatever silly reason, has been ripped away and we are left with nothing, when everyone we thought a friend has abandoned us, then we are truly ourselves. No false pretenses, no putting on airs, no facades. Just our self. In that brief moment of clarity, we make a choice. Do we lie to our self or do we take a true look at our self? To those of us who continue to lie to ourselves, I am sorry. Truly sorry that you were too afraid to accept who you really are and what you’ve really become. Perhaps, in the future, you will be allowed another chance to peel away the layers and look at yourself. If you do, I wish you all the strength in the world to break the cycle and be honest with yourself. To those of us who were able to face the stark reality of ourselves, did we like what we saw or were we disappointed, unable to look ourselves in the eye? It is my fervent hope that you will when presented with this opportunity, take full advantage and become not the person you think you should be, but the person you need to be. If you do anything, please listen to and follow, this advice: “None of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day … make a wish and think of me. Make your life spectacular.” A little over a year ago I had this opportunity presented to me and it’s been a long road. I choose to be better, different, stronger. I decided there’s to much pain and anger in this world so I’m not going to add to it. All I can say is that I’ve started to make my life spectacular. I hope you will too.
